Fed: School kids encouraged to take up athletics

Almost two million primary school children around Australia are to be encouraged toget involved in athletics.

Some 54 development officers plan to travel to every primary school in the countryover the next four years to encourage students to participate in a range of sports.

Federal Sports Minister ROD KEMP says the program will offer children the chance totake part in up to 27 modified events including soft shot puts, plastic hurdles and matsinstead of sand for long jump.

The scheme is funded by Athletics Australia, IGA (Independent Grocers of Australia)and the Australian Sports Commission.
