Solicitors aim to make Africa safer

Two Bath solicitors will be getting on their bikes to improveroad safety in Africa next week.

Stone King partner Peter Woodhouse, who is a transport andemployment lawyer, and Simon Walker, a solicitor in the firm'sfamily and mediation team, are taking part in the Freight TransportAssociation's Cycle Challenge 2011 next Wednesday.

The association, which represents the lorry industry, is thisyear aiming to raise Pounds 50,000 for the charity Transaid, whichworks to improve lives across Africa by creating better transport.

The lawyers will be cycling 55 miles from Swindon to Bristol viaWootton Bassett, Chippenham, Melksham and Bath, to raise funds forTransaid's Professional Driver Training Project.

This aims to improve safety in sub-Saharan Africa where roaddeaths are the third biggest premature killer after HIV/Aids andmalaria.

Peter, who is chairman of the South West FTA Regional Council, said: "There is a great shortage of qualified professional driversin sub-Saharan Africa where sadly road traffic accidents happen alltoo frequently.

"Road crashes can have devastating consequences, especially inpoorer countries where emergency services are often non-existent andhealth services struggle to cope. "Simon and I hope to raise as muchmoney as we can for Transaid to fund more professional drivertraining courses and help make Africa's roads safer."
